Baraw Sugbo Workshop
Join us at Stick Fighting Toronto on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, for an exclusive workshop focused on the highly effective knife-defense system of Baraw Sugbo. This special event is a unique opportunity to cross-train and expand your Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) skill set under the guidance of a renowned visiting instructor. Whether you are new to FMA or an experienced practitioner looking to sharpen your defensive capabilities, this workshop is designed to provide practical, hands-on training applicable to all skill levels.
What is Baraw Sugbo?
Baraw Sugbo, originally known as Arnes Diablo, is a specialized, close-quarters knife defense system that originated in Cebu, Philippines. Unlike many other martial arts, it is entirely dedicated to empty-hand defense against a knife-wielding attacker. The system is designed to counter fully committed, aggressive knife thrusts and slashes with serious intent.
Training in Baraw Sugbo emphasizes fluid movement, precise body control, sensitivity, and the seamless transition from defending a blade to controlling the attacker. It involves progressive drills that teach practitioners how to intercept, trap, and ultimately disarm an opponent using joint manipulation, throws, and strikes, all while operating at an extremely close range.
About the Instructor: Punong Guro Michael Malanyaon
We are thrilled to welcome Punong Guro (PG) Michael Malanyaon to Stick Fighting Toronto to lead this workshop. PG Michael is the head of MAKTAN Filipino Martial Arts (based in Cincinnati, Ohio) and is a highly respected figure in the FMA community.
Like our own instructors at Stick Fighting Toronto, PG Michael is a fully qualified instructor in the Taboada Balintawak system, making his teaching style highly complementary to our core curriculum. In addition to his deep knowledge of Balintawak and other FMA systems, he is a certified Level 3 Instructor of Baraw Sugbo directly under Grand Master Eduardo "Boy" Ceniza, the current head of the system in Cebu. PG Michael brings a wealth of practical experience and a dynamic teaching approach that will benefit practitioners of all backgrounds.
Don't miss this chance to train in this effective, specialized and practical knife-defense system directly from the Philippines. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!
